Home Brew Ingredients That You Must Have In A Home-based Brewing Process

By Shirley Baker

There is fun and education in domestic brewing. Regardless of the style that a brewer uses domestically, there are some home brew ingredients that should never miss in the list. Whenever you decide to perform the brewing, this article comes in handy since you must have malt, yeast, hops, water and sugars.

The main ingredient in a residential beer-making process is barley malt that comes in two types: 2-row malt and 6-row malt. The first type has grains that are huge and husked. Most brewers use malt for their product even though some add other adjuncts that include corn and rice.

Steeping forms the first step of home beer making process where grains are made to appear germinating. They are then dried in a quick manner to arrest the enzymes that convert starch into sugar. When the brewing process starts, the enzymes are released.

Yeast is the other ingredient in domestic beer making, and it comes in two types: lager and ale yeasts. The main difference between the two types of yeasts stands out in the resultant product that they produce.

If a brewer applies ale yeast, then the final product will attain an aroma that is floral based. Beginners find the yeast easy to use. The yeast is classified as top fermenting yeast due to its tendency to form a foam at the top before settling down. The Higher temperature is a requirement when using ale yeast than when using the other kind.

On its part, lager yeast does not require high temperatures. It has a characteristic of fermenting at the bottom under low temperatures. Due to the temperature variance, lager ale does not attain a floral aroma like the ale yeast attains during a brewing process.

A common characteristic in both yeasts is that they are manufactured commercially, and they take dry of liquid form. They are usually available for sale to home brewers.

Water plays a significant role in the quality that the domestically made beer possesses. This is because water is different according to the regions where it is found. The mineral content that is found in water, as well as its hardness or softness, gives beer certain characteristics that become the official quality of beer from that region. The variance in the quality of beer makes water have different styles.

Brewers have come with a way of giving home-made beer characteristics of beer from a certain region. What they do is that they use additives that either makes the water hard or soft to match with water from the specific region of their choice.

Sugars are the other important ingredient during a home beer-making process. They play the role of affecting the taste as well as the alcohol levels of beer since they add to the amount of sugar that the yeast needed to ferment.

Use of priming sugars during the bottling process makes the beer become carbonated. Start making your own beer and you shall enjoy it more.
