A Beginner's Guide to Choosing Wine Making Supplies

By Matthew Campbell

Making your own alcoholic beverages can be a good way to save money. Although getting your initial equipment together can mean a bit of an investment you will end up saving money in the long run. Here are some things that you should consider when you are shopping for your own wine making supplies. It won't be long before you can start enjoying your own delicious drinks at a fraction of the price that it would cost if you purchase it in the store.

While most wine is made from grape juice you can also find varieties that are made with fruit juice as well. If you are interested in trying these different types of alcoholic beverages you need to keep in mind that additional equipment or ingredients may be necessary in order to get the results you are looking for.

You should also think about your basic brewing equipment as well. You will need a large container that you put the juice in so that the fermentation process can begin. Often this is nothing more elaborate than a large plastic pail with a tight fitting lid. You need to be able to keep the air out while still allowing gas to escape the bucket. You also need to choose a carboy or secondary fermenting vessel as well. You should consider whether glass or plastic will best suit your budget and your personal preferences.

Any type of wine will need several different chemicals added to it. In the beginning, vintners need to add a specific type of yeast to the juice and then later they add other chemicals to remove particles, stop the fermentation process and stabilize the wine while it matures. If you are unsure of what to add and at what point to add it you may want to think about purchasing a complete kit that will have all of these components in it.

There are many different kits on the market and the prices can vary quite a bit. Often the price will depend on how much juice is in a kit. Some require you to add more water than others and these kits are often more reasonably priced. You should consider the length of time it takes to brew a batch when you choose a kit.

Once your batch has fermented for the required amount of time you will need to bottle it. You can usually find glass bottles and corks for a small amount of money. The kit will give you instructions on how to sterilize the bottle and once you have it is simply a matter of filling the bottles and sealing them with corks.

When deciding whether or not you will be able to make your own vintage, you will also need to think in terms of space. You will need room to store your carboy and fermentation vessel as well as a place for the bottles to sit while they mature.

Working with a store that specializes in home brewing can be a great idea especially if you are new. They may be able to give you advice about which kits have the best results and even provide space for you to make your batch if you do not have enough room at home.
