By Janet Thomas

Strict veganism or vegan for want of another description is someone that abstains from eating or making use of any animal and by product. However, one can still enjoy Vegan granola which is a versatile product enjoyed by many vegans. It is a popular sort after snack and can be either be bought off the shelf or made by oneself in the home kitchen.

It is a great filler upper no matter which rules or philosophies you follow. However, with strict vegetarians, no dairy products are used in its consumption such as milk or yogurt. Never mind that it is a hearty and crunchy munchy meal enjoyed by all.

Vegans take using this product and other animal based products a step further. They will not use any animal based products as they also believe that this is not a sustainable practice. Other products that are shied away from are leather shoes, bags, clothing such as belts and many more.

A meal of granola offers a hearty meal as it contains proteins derived from the nuts used such as almonds. Others can be used such as hazelnuts, cashews and monkey nuts. Fruit is used to in its preparation as well as dried fruits such as cranberries, dates, dried peaches and even apricots. It all depends on the person's preferences and there is much to chose from. It can also be consumed with fruit juices and liquidized into a smoothie using any choice of fruit juice.

If not bought from a supermarket, it is simple to make in the home kitchen. All that is required are the ingredients and an oven to bake with. The basic formulation is made with rolled oats, bran and other nuts like almonds and even sesame seeds. Using honey or maple syrup as an additive, simply stir the mixture together and bake until a crunchy consistency is obtained.

Don't forget the dried fruit though. These can be any dried fruits such as dates, sultanas, dried peach and raisins to name just a few. Toss everything into a mixer and chop up but not too finely. Once this has been done, add honey or maple syrup or even organic sugar with a bit of water and then bake until crunchy but tried to avoid burning as sugar based substances such as honey will tend to burn easily.

As said, vegans who do not use dairy products substitute soya milk instead of milk. Using this ingredient, smoothies are a delicious treat especially when served with fresh fruit. Fruit can be shopped up and served in pieces or it can be chopped up in a mixer together with all the ingredients. Other milk substitutes can be used such such as almond milk, coconut or rice milks.

Vegans adhere to a strict diet and with this product it is not different. The term granola was coined in the mid eighteen hundreds in a town called Dansville New York. It has grown in its use in leaps and bounds and is enjoyed by all in every part of the globe.
