Characteristics Of A Good Vegetable Farm Somerville New Jersey

By Kathleen West

Just like any other business, farming is also to be keenly observed for it to succeed. These factors are to be compared and weighed before any operations start to minimize losses. Like any other crop, these too require high selection of places they are going to be grown so that they can yield more profit. The following are guidelines to choosing a vegetable farm Somerville New Jersey.

Water. Water is an essential factor that determines the growth of crops especially horticultural. They need high amounts of water and high rate of irrigation for them to survive. The land for cultivation, therefore, should be situated where there is a reliable source of water. Water volume and quality must be considered in this too. This water should be free from toxic elements such as boron which damage crops. Sodium also is a metal that is needed in low amounts, and if it exceeds, it becomes toxic.

Soil type. This involves all the soil characteristics that are most visible such as drainage and texture. Not all soils support the growth of these crops. Soils such as clay have water logging properties which lead to poor drainage and poor aeration. These two leads to poor root development in the respective crops hence death. The soils that are highly hydrated and aerated support the growth of horticultural crops.

Soil quality. These are the contents of the soil. A good soil for crop growth must have all the nutrients that are required for the growth of crops. Macro nutrients such as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus are of great importance in the health of these plants. Others like boron are needed in low amounts and hence should not exceed the required amounts less they will be toxic.

Topography. The place must be located in an appropriate place which will support good growth of crops. Bushy areas act as breeding places for diseases that affect and kill crops. They also act as hosts for pests and potential crop diseases. Sloppy areas are inappropriate because they are often swept off by running water which drains their nutrients and exposes crop roots. Lowly areas are water clogged and tend to weaken the roots of plants hence killing them due to poor aeration and drainage.

Accessibility. The area must be accessible to ease all the operations. Just like any other business, things like supplies, equipment, and market are to be easily accessible to promote its growth. Infrastructure such as roads too should be near so that the products can easily get into the market. Main roads that link to other main means of transport such as air and water should be connected too.

Cost. The amount of money that is to be put in business before it starts is an important factor to consider. The purchasing price and the amount of money to prepare the land should not amount into high costs that may exceed the profit value.

Labor. A farm needs qualified workers to work in them. Labor must be easily available and cheap. Also, ensure the person you inquire from has the knowledge and understanding to give expertise work.
