You Could Have A Great Business Buying Wholesale Bagels And Reselling Them

By Timothy Brown

People love to think owning a business means making their own hours and getting rich the easy way. The truth is that small business owners do more working than relaxing. Some become very successful, but it is seldom quick or easy. If you think you have what it takes to make as an entrepreneur, and are considering opening a retail specialty shop, you could buy wholesale bagels and resell them to the public.

There is no law that says you have to be a baker and offer customers goods you make yourself, especially if you don't know anything about baking. It might take a long time to find really good recipes and learn how to perfect them. Instead you could spend the time with a mentor who is a successful, retail business person and doesn't mind showing you how to become one yourself.

There is no way to start even a small enterprise without some capital. You will have to sit down and come up with a business plan. You could talk to friends and relatives about going into business with you or investing in one you would run yourself. If that doesn't work, you will probably have to talk to a lender about borrowing the money to get you started.

One way to make your money go farther is by opening a take out only shop. That way you won't have to invest in as much furniture or hire as many employees as an eat in establishment would require. You can also get away with renting a much smaller place.

If all you plan on is offering bagels, you are missing a great opportunity. Selling different varieties of coffees, teas, and juices will add revenue, and these items just naturally go along with other breakfast items. Jellies, jams, cream cheese, and maybe some chocolate in refrigerated units are worth trying.

It would be nice if you didn't have to spend money on advertising and marketing, but you will so you might as well do it right. Your website should go up before you open the shop doors for the first time. Advertising a grand opening with discounts, door prizes, and coupons will get people in the door. Enticing them with specials on a regular basis is one way to develop a loyal customer base.

Hungry people are attracted to the smell of fresh baked goods, so you need to keep your warming oven working all the time. This way you will always have fresh food for your customers, and the odor coming from your open door will be irresistible to passers by. Light background music and a daily specials board outside your door are also inviting.

It isn't easy to start a small business. It's even harder to make a success of it. The willingness to work hard and long every day and having a great product, smart marketing, a prime location, and lots of luck are all you need.
