Popular Latin American Cooking Recipes

Latin American food is rich, colorful, robust and flavorful, in short, fun to explore. This region includes Caribbean and Mexico and South and Central America, and every part has its traditional dishes. Latin American cooking recipes are inventive in every single part, and here are some traditional ones you will surely enjoy in.

Brazilian empanadas are very popular, and it isn't complicated to make them. You need three cups of flour, some salt, one small spoon of turmeric, ten tablespoons of butter, six tablespoons of shortening, one egg and one half cup of beer for the dough. First you have to mix dry ingredients with butter, and then you have to add the egg and the beer, and leave the dough to rest.

Now you have to prepare the filling. Saute one diced onion on two tablespoons of butter, add one can of diced palm hearts and two small diced tomatoes. After few minutes, add some Sherry and one spoon of tomato paste. When it is done, add peeled and diced shrimp, maybe one half pound. Add some salt and fresh ground pepper.

Make thin rounds of your dough and place the filling on each piece. Brush edges with egg yolk and seal them in half. You can use fork to do that. Fry empanadas in deep oil, preheated on 190 degrees. These tasty empanadas may be served hot or cold, as snacks or as a side dish.

Cuban sandwiches are highly popular, but people mostly add jalapenos and mayonnaise in them today. Traditional Cuban sandwiches don't contain such ingredients. You will need two slices of Cuban or French bread, yellow mustard, four pickle slices, four slices of ham and four slices of roast pork, and three slices of Swiss cheese. Put it in a sandwich press. You can add some butter as well.

Coconut rice is another traditional dish that is easy to prepare and tastes really great. You will need two cups of long grain rice, the same amount of water, one can of coconut milk, one or two tablespoons of sugar, some salt, half cup of good raisins and the same amount of toasted coconut flakes.

Cook rice in water, sugar and coconut milk. When water evaporates, cover the saucepan and cook on the lowest temperature for approximately twenty minutes. Remove from heat, add raisins, stir and cover the saucepan again. Sprinkle with toasted, crispy coconut flakes.

Churro, or Spanish doughnut, is widely popular snack. It is easy to prepare and really tasty. There are numerous recipes for preparing it, and here is one of them. You will need two cups of flour, some salt, three or four tablespoons of sugar and the same amount of vegetable oil for the dough.

Place three spoons of sugar, some salt and three spoons of vegetable oil in a saucepan and let it boil. Pour in two cups of flour and stir until you get a ball of dough. Make long strips using pastry bag. Fry in hot vegetable oil, until golden and drain on kitchen towels. Roll each doughnut in the mixture of cinnamon and sugar, and that's it. Simple, funny and delicious.
