Blueberries Mississippi And The Most Popular Varieties

Blueberries are certainly among the most popular fruits, thanks to numerous qualities and really excellent taste. Mississippi, especially in the southern-east area, two basic types of this lovely fruits are grown. Rabbiteye, which is native to this part of state, and Southern Highbrush. Harvesting season begins early in May, and lasts till September, and both types of blueberries Mississippi have numerous varieties.

As it was said, the type Rabbiteye is native to Southeast area. Thanks to the fact that it requires so called cross pollination, it is important to grow at least two varieties in close proximity. They might have similar characteristics, or desired ones can be combined. Brightwell, Tifblue, Centurion or Premier are some of highly appreciated varieties.

Harvesting season for this popular Tifblue sort starts in June, to be more precise, June 20. The fruits are large, juicy and tasty, with small scars and lovely color. Beautiful berries may be picked manually, or harvested mechanically, both for freezing and consuming fresh. This sort needs up to six hundred and fifty chill hours. Powderblee is also quite popular, thanks to really good characteristics of fruits and vigorous plant growth.

Centurion is especially interesting because it has self-fertile flowers. This sub specie has medium size berries which are medium in color as well. Harvest season begins in late July, and continues through August, till early September. As for most other varieties, mechanical harvesting is used both for fresh and frozen berries. There is a large market for both fresh and frozen ones.

Brightwell, with its mid blue berries, very small scars and really appealing flavor, has another great characteristic, it produces great volume of these lovely fruit. In Southeast area the harvesting season will start June 1. This sort needs up to four hundred chill hours. Another interesting variety is Premier, with its vigorous plant growth, large berries and high productivity.

Another main type of blueberries in Mississippi is called Southern Highbush. Ripening starts early in May, and the earliest sorts are O'Neal and Reveile. Other varieties of Southern Highbush also are harvested during May, for example Bladen, Blue Ridge, Cooper, Magnolia or Gulf Coast. O'Neal is among the most popular ones, with its medium blue color, really large berries and the fact it requires only four hundred chill hours. It also has really nice flavor.

Cape Fear and Reveille have lighter color and some other interesting qualities, as well as really lovely taste. When it comes to commercially highly interesting sorts, Jubilee is by all means among the most appreciated ones. This variety is easy to mechanically harvest, in one or two picks, and up to 95% of berries can be successfully picked this way. There are some sorts more suitable for yard growing, and some have special characteristics that make them especially popular or commercially interesting. For example, Reveille holds up in storage especially well.

Blueberries have so many great characteristics and high nutritional value. Everyone has their favorites, depending on their size, taste or some other qualities. Some special characteristics are always appreciated, such as small, dry scars, appealing color or large berries. Market price is highest in the beginning of harvesting season, and that's why those earliest varieties are especially popular.
