Dishes That Qualify As Mexican Food Danville VA

By Diane Roberts

Many people regard the United States as a veritable melting pot of dozens of different backgrounds and cultures. During the last two centuries, people from all across the world came to this country, many times bringing with them facets of their cultures including cuisine that they cooked and ate. As they became incorporated into everyday American society, so did the fare they made at home for their families. This meshing together of cuisine and culture is no exception to people who came here from Mexico. Because of the proliferation of Mexican food Danville VA residents can now find their favorite foods from Mexico at restaurants, grocery stores, and other places today.

Most people today recognize that the cuisine they know and love is not really genuine to Mexico. In fact, it has largely been Americanized and somewhat dulled to appeal to the larger array of palates found in the population today. Still, it has become so popular it is now served in homes, schools, and restaurants everywhere.

One of the most common dishes you could order in one of these establishments is a basic taco. The standard taco that is familiar to most Americans consists of a hard fried corn tortilla shell filled with everything from ground beef or chicken to tomatoes, lettuce, and salsa. Other ingredients include sour cream and guacamole. If you prefer to make tacos at home, you most often will find everything you need for this fare sold in your local grocery store.

Making tacos in your kitchen is also relatively simple. Most grocery stores sell taco shells that are packaged and ready to use. You only have to buy and brown the chicken or ground beef, chop the tomatoes and lettuce, and either buy or shred your own cheese. You can also add seasonings from a ready made pack or mix your own to get the flavor you want.

Another relatively easy dish to make is enchiladas. Enchiladas are perhaps more American than anything else. Most people who live in Mexico do not eat them. Still, they appeal to the American palate. Made correctly, they can have a hint of spice along with a variety of flavor.

The meat filling is put inside of a flour tortilla that is not baked or fried, at least at first. Once you put the meat filling in, you then fold the tortilla loosely, leaving open both ends rather than wrapping it like a burrito. Putting the fold of the enchilada face down in a baking dish, you then cover the entire dish with enchilada sauce as well as shredded cheese before baking it.

Fare from Mexico also includes desserts, again which are now Americanized here. The most common desserts include flan and fried ice cream. Flan is a custard that is baked into a soft pudding cake. Some people put raisins or dates in it and cover it with caramel. Fried ice cream is not actually fried. It is a large scoop of ice cream that is rolled in sugar and cinnamon. It is then topped with whipped cream and a cherry as well as caramel.

These examples of Mexican food can be found in restaurants around the country. They are also simple to buy ingredients for and make at home if you want. The fare is not genuinely authentic to the country of Mexico. Nonetheless, it is branded as Tex Mex and regarded as fare that can be linked to Mexico and immigrants who came here from there.
