Everybody needs to eat in order to stay alive. For many people, however, the enjoyment of a meal is a special pleasure. They take pleasure in savouring various flavours, textures and even colours when they eat. Eating at a good restaurant means that they can sit back and relax with their company while somebody that truly enjoys cooking prepares their meal. A good food review website can help such diners to discover new and interesting eating establishments.

Many cultures celebrate meal times as times when the family can communicate, share and enjoy the company. Even in some very poor communities families gather at meal times and eat together, sharing whatever food they have. They take their time and enjoy the privilege of having food to eat. Eating is indeed a cultural activity and the offering of food and drink is the hallmark of hospitality.

Not everybody that enjoys fine dining or that can prepare delicious meals are good reviewers. Reviewers need to be able to write well. They have to use language to involve the reader in the experience of seeing, tasting and smelling the dishes. If they cannot achieve this the reader will not be able to determine whether the restaurant or meal will be to their taste.

Good reviewers do not only rate the meals that they evaluate. They also report on the ambiance of the restaurant, the efficiency of the service and the menu. Many potential diners will not enjoy a meal at a noisy venue, for example, regardless of how good the meal taste. Others will want to know whether special dishes for children are available or even if there are facilities to keep small children occupied.

Readers need to know how the meals are prepared. Many people are allergic to certain ingredients and if such ingredients are used in the cooking process they need to know about it. People with diabetes, high cholesterol and other chronic conditions have to be very careful what they eat and the reviewer must provide information on such matters.

Reviewers, especially those few with an enviable reputation, can have a serious impact upon the success of a restaurant. Restaurants have gone down in flames due to one or two very bad reports. The opposite is also true. Unknown establishments have shot to fame after a well known reviewer published a highly favourable opinion and recommended the place to influential patrons. In this manner reviewers can create or destroy reputations.

Some critics question the value of the services offered by reviewers. They say that eating is an intensely personal matter. A dish that may be a particular joy to one person van be repulsive for another. The fact remains, however, that a balanced report by an objective reviewer can help potential diners to find a restaurant that will cater for their needs and tastes.

Millions of people eat simply because they need nutrition but for many a good meal at a favourite restaurant is a pleasurable experience that enhances their quality of life. One only has to look at the very large number of restaurants in every town and city to see that, for numerous people, eating involves much more than merely consuming the nutrients that they need. For them, a meal involves all the senses.
