Common Sense Health Reasons For Choosing Grass Fed Beef And Pork

By Christopher Gibson

People are slowly becoming more aware and knowledgeable about they are eating. Food manufacturers are getting in on the act labelling everything they can as natural, lite, and organic. Consumers who are also meat eaters have choices then it comes to the kinds of animal products they choose. Many are opting to spend the extra money and choose grass fed beef and pork for its superior taste and the many health benefits associated with it.

For some the difference between grain and grass fed hogs and cattle is confusing. Livestock raised in pastures and allowed a natural, foraging diet grow the way nature intended them to. They have less fat because they have free rein in the fields. Raising livestock this way is more expensive, and consumers should expect ranchers to pass those costs on to them.

The animals with pure grain diets are usually raised in facilities known as concentrated animal feeding operations. The purpose is to raise animals as fast as possible. CAFO cattle and hogs need antibiotics to ward off diseases that are rampant in such closely confined areas. In order to make them fat as fast as possible, handlers inject them with hormones. Because of this CAFO animals will grow a year faster than those in pastures, making it possible to get them to market quicker and money into the pockets of producers.

You might lose some weight eating pasture raised cattle and hogs. These animals are leaner than those raised on grain. The crowded conditions of CAFOs cause stress in livestock and that results in high levels of cortisol. This makes the animal meat fattier. Dietitians estimate that people who eat organic meat save more than 16,000 calories every year.

Pasture raised beef and pork help stabilize blood sugar levels. This is extremely important for those who suffer from diabetes and heart disease. People who suffer from low insulin sensitivity are often reduced to taking insulin injections to regulate their levels. CLA is a fatty acid found in meats and dairy believed to help maintain weight loss and lean muscle mass.

CLA may also help fight cancers. Women who eat a diet that is rich in this nutrient are significantly less likely to develop breast cancer than those without. CLA is one of the only nutrients contained in meat that has been shown to reduce the risk of certain cancers. There is twice as much CLA in pasture raised livestock as in cattle and hogs raised on grain.

You will get six times the Omega 3 healthy fats from grass fed pork and beef as you will with the cattle and hogs raised on a diet of grains. Omega 3 fatty acids reduce the symptoms of depression and increase your ability to focus. It helps those suffering from rheumatoid arthritis.

The food choices you make are important. It will affect your health in more ways than you would have believed. Eating meats, fruits, and vegetables raised naturally will make a difference.
