Tips On Planning A Marco Island Vacation

By Marissa Velazquez

Situated on Florida's western coast, Marco Island is an area that many travelers have found appealing for the numerous decades. It is a subtropical island surrounded by beautiful scenery, and overlooks the Gulf of Mexico. Those planning a Marco Island vacation may find the following information useful:

The aforementioned area is six miles long and four miles wide. It is only ninety miles west of Miami, and approximately 150 miles south of Tampa. It is called the Gateway to the Ten Thousand Islands. The latter is an archipelago of islands off the coast of Florida.

History books report that the region was originally inhabited in 4000 BC by the Calusa Indians, who settled there at that time. They are believed to be descendents from the Mayan Indian tribe, and lived in this part of the world for thousands of years. They created generous size statues from shells, using them as both religious temples and burial sites. Archaeologists still find bits of these shells when completing historical digs.

History books also report that the region was first modernized by W. T. Collier in 1870. He traveled to the area with his spouse and nine children, and founded numerous businesses. Included in the latter is a 20 room lodge that is still currently in operation. Businesses in the region thrived until the beginning of the Great Depression, after which development did not continue until the 1960s.

Marco Island is conveniently located. Within thirty minutes one can reach fine dining establishments, cultural activities, shopping, and world class entertainment. It is also nearby to the affluent city of Naples. Outstanding lodging and accommodations are offered to please even the most discriminating visitor. Essentially all people are happy with the amenities and appointments at the numerous hotels and resorts in the area.

When planning such a vacation, one must take several things into consideration. Perhaps the most important of these is the time of year during which he or she wishes to travel. This is because prices for accommodations vary considerably from one season to the next, and therefore it is wise to contact the various resorts and hotels to find out about rates before finalizing one's plans.

In addition, vacationers should give thought to the attractions and landmarks in which they are interested before booking the trip. Those who prioritize such things in advance can then proceed to reserve rooms at the hotel or resort that is closest to the events and activities they have an interest in or want to visit while vacationing. As soon as one chooses his or her dates, the accommodations should be reserved. This will ensure that the traveler avoids being shut out of the establishment of his or her choice.

One can go online or seek the services of a travel agent when booking a Marco Island vacation. No matter which venue one selects, it is always a good idea to comparison shop prior to finalizing the reservations. This is due to the fact that costs vary from one website or travel agency to the next. Nothing is more disheartening than offering a nonrefundable deposit on a particular package, only to find that a similar vacation could have been reserved through another merchant for less money. Ultimately, those who choose Marco Island for their annual vacation can expect to have the experience of a lifetime.
