Make An Easy Ethical Lifestyle Choice With Vegan Frozen Meals

By Jaclyn Hurley

With a growing number of people trying to be more ethical in their consumer choices, veganism is becoming increasingly popular. However, giving up so many of your favorite foods can be a challenge. The good news is that the variety of delicious vegan frozen meals makes that transition much easier.

Many people think that vegans can simply eat vegetarian meals. This is not always the case, however. While vegetarians usually eat dairy products and eggs, vegans avoid any kind of animal product. This includes not only eggs and dairy products such as butter, cheese and yogurt but also honey. Some religions require that their adherents follow a vegan diet but many vegans choose this lifestyle because of the cruelty inherent in farming with animals.

It's not difficult to eat only vegan meals. You simply need to put in a bit of effort when you cook, just like with any other kind of diet. For many people this is where the challenge comes in because you don't always have the time or the energy to spend hours in the kitchen. Luckily a frozen meal requires not much more than taking it from the freezer, removing the lid and switching on the oven.

Several Asian religions encourage or even require a vegan diet. It's no wonder then that dishes from this region are especially easy to prepare in meat and dairy free versions. Curries are a natural choice but you'll also find several dishes from countries like Japan, China, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and Myanmar that are great options for vegans. Latin America and the Middle East are other regions that offer dishes suitable for vegans.

People often think of vegans as health nuts who munch on brown rice and lentils all day. While many vegans do prefer healthy meal options and unprocessed foods, this doesn't mean that you can't fall back on comfort food sometimes. With dairy-free cheese substitutes becoming more readily available, there is no reason why you can't enjoy a cheesy pasta dish, for example.

You can also enjoy your favorite fast foods in animal-friendly versions. Burgers and hot dogs can be made from soy, lentils, beans or other legumes and some manufacturers have perfected recipes where you won't even realize you're not eating the real thing. Because of the many cheese substitutes available, you don't have to give up grilled cheese sandwiches or pizza either.

A good meal becomes a great one when you end it with something sweet. Ice cream doesn't have to contain dairy to still have a rich and creamy taste. Ingredients such as coconut milk or even avocado can do the job of cream perfectly well. Baking is easy too since you can use things like apple sauce or vinegar instead of eggs and there are many chocolate options that are completely dairy free.

As veganism is becoming more widespread, finding ready-made food options is becoming easier too. You'll probably find some meals in the frozen-foods section of your local supermarket. Health-food stores often stock an even wider variety and if you need to, you can easily order meals online. It's a great idea too to make some extra when you prepare time-consuming dishes such as curries and then freeze the surplus in portion-sized containers for a homemade meal in minutes.
