What To Look For When Choosing In Denver Coffee Roasters For Your Kitchen

By Marci Glover

People who take their coffee seriously will appreciate the benefits of owning an automatic coffee roaster. These machines allow the user to roast as many fresh beans as he or she wants at one time, for a crisp, flavorful taste that hasn't faded like most store-bought brands. In Denver coffee roasters can be purchased in many home and kitchen stores, but they come in different styles with varying features, so the buyer should first know a little about them.

The user's coffee consumption will typically determine the volume of beans that he or she wants to roast. Four ounces of green, raw beans will generally produce 26 to 42 cups. Roasted beans should be left to sit no longer than three days before use, so they stay fresh and have optimal flavor, people usually like to roast a daily batch to ensure this. Each model has a maximum capacity of beans it can accommodate at once.

The quality of the beans' flavor can vary depending on the way in which they were roasted. Air roasters offer faster roasting and a strong flavor, whereas drum roasting is a slower process which results in a subtle but full-bodied taste.

Some roasters are designed primarily for either outdoor or indoor use. Most of them work more efficiently when the temperature outside is warmer, whether indoors or outdoors, and some have been made to produce less smoke, making them a good choice for roasting inside one's home. They should also be relatively easy to maintain, that is, parts should be simple to remove and keep clean.

The most popular types of home roasters are air and drum designs. The former roasts in less time and produces a bolder flavor, while the latter slowly seals in a full-body taste. Those who are considering buying a roaster need to know what each type has to offer and what's involved in its use so they can choose the one which suits them best.

An air roaster works in a manner similar to a popcorn popper. The beans float on top of a current of hot air which simultaneously rotates and roasts them. They are well suited to roasting even a small batch of beans, such as just enough to make coffee for oneself and a friend.

Drum roasters have typically higher capacities and contain the beans in a heated cylinder which revolves horizontally. Inside the drum, is a paddle that moves the beans along so they will roast in an even manner. The drum itself can be either a solid or perforated structure, the latter permits a better flow of hot air, thus roasting the beans more thoroughly. The process is typically about 14-20 minutes, and takes longer if a darker roast is desired.

Once the buyer has determined which style of roaster appeals most to him or her, details such as special features can be evaluated on various models. Generally, drum variations offer a wider selection of features than the simpler air roasters. Things to consider include programming options, type of controls, and if it is a low-smoke design.
